FYI (For your information):

The balls in the center simply transfer the energy on to the next ball, releasing the energy to the end ball... Using "chain reaction", electricity travels at a speed of 186,000 miles per second!

DOCUMENTS

It seems like there are always plenty of documents at the worksite. Documents must be completed for everything from your daily time sheet to "have-done" reports. Just about the time you think you have a document to cover everything about your work, you discover that you're missing some information. It has been a while since I was fortunate enough to be in a training program that taught me about formulas and conversions. Since retention of that type information is not always 100%, I created some documents to help me have the information with me when I need it. The first one on the list is the "Power Wheel". I didn't design this one, I just "recreated" it. It includes the power formula and it's various configurations. To use the Power Wheel, find the type of value that you need to know in the inner circle (P, I, E, or R), and then use the formula that supplies the known values available to you. Each value has three possible formulas to use, and are inside the corresponding quarter circle next to each letter. P is power or watts, I is current or amperes, E is voltage, and R is resistance.

Print a copy of this for the Apprentice that you work with.

If you have a Laptop or Desktop Computer, it's handy to have some MS Excel documents in it that will make basic calculations for determining quantities of materials needed or for work accomplished. I have designed a workbook with worksheets that I call "Auto-Calc" documents.

They are set up where you simply have to enter values in a few cells, and the document does the conversions for you. These are not secret programs, just basic Microsoft Spreadsheet worksheets. I have no Patents on them, so the point here is to get them to Linemen that need them in the field or the office where they can be used. You can make your own, or request them by Email attachment from me and copy them to your computer.

The first worksheet is the "METRIC CONVERSIONS" table. I have trouble remembering the formulas to convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius and back. When I want to know what the normal operating temperature of a transformer is, most of the temperature gauges say 25 degrees Celsius. That's 77 degrees Fahrenheit to us Americans that are not accustomed to the metric system. Then too, some of the report forms that I've had to fill out for Substation Inspections asked me what the Ambient Temperature (surrounding temperature of the air) is in Celsius.... Well, I carry a Fahrenheit Thermometer to get the temperatures that I need for sagging wire and applying herbicide, so I need to be able to convert to Celsius.

While I was at it, I added some other conversions that I may run into from time to time that have to do with distances and areas. With this document in your PC, all you have to do is enter your measurement in the appropriate box (field), and it automatically gives you the conversion in another box. You can print the sheet to keep the numbers, copy the sheet to store the calculations in the PC, or simply use the same document over and over without saving anything.

METRIC CONVERSIONS

The next worksheet is the "GUY WIRE CALCULATIONS" document. This one works very similar to the METRIC CONVERSIONS document, in that you simply enter some required fields for each particular structure that you are calculating the amount of guy wire needed. In transmission work, normally the structure or pole will have a maximum of 8 guy wires on it, so I have 8 fields to enter each guy wire individually and then the document calculates the total amount of guy wire that I need to take out for the job. You can double any of the guys (loop guy) that need it, by changing a field for those guys. It adds in overhead guys when you tell it to, and adds an automatic 5% for waste for when you make them up. This particular sheet is designed to be used with Preformed Deadends and on flat ground. If you're using wrap guys or are in hilly county (where the anchor rod is up the hill or down over the hill), you may need to modify my design a little or just add in some extra or deduct some when you pull the material for your job. With the cost cutting measures that companies are needing to implement now, this document can help keep the waste down to a minimum without (hopefully) shorting yourself when you get out on the job. The document comes with shaded data entry fields. The shading of the data entry fields help to locate all of the fields that need entries when in poor light conditions (PC in the truck on location) or just to make sure that all fields are completed before accepting the calculation. I omitted them in this sample for clarity. The actual documents have light color shading in them.  The fields that you fill in are the boxes to the right of the "Guy Number 1", "Guy Number 2", Guy Number 3", etc. that are about half-way down the sheet.

GUY WIRE CALCULATIONS

I also have available some "Auto-Calc" worksheets for measuring ACREAGE (for use when applying herbicides or when cutting R/W) and POLE GROUNDS (for calculating the amount of ground wire needed, (feet or pounds), to ground any length pole and the pounds of staples required to attach it), a LIQUID CAPACITY sheet for converting liquid quantities (good for use with herbicide applications), a general FORMULAS sheet for a variety of formulas used in all types of work, and one for determining the amount of VOLUME in a Woodpecker Hole or Decay Pocket for use in determining the quantity of pole restoration material needed to fill the void. They all use basic formulas to do the calculations, and can be made easily by you or someone familiar with MS Software at your company. Making them yourself can be made easier by using the Help programs in your PC. Give it a try....

If you decide not to make your own calculation sheets, you can get them from me by Email attachment. A small donation for my efforts will be accepted, but not mandatory.  To order your set of "Auto-Calc" documents, send me an email with the words "Auto-Calc" in the subject line. You will receive a full set of Auto-Calc worksheets in one Excel document attached to a return email. Please read the important disclaimer below so there will be no misunderstandings. There are NO RETURNS and NO REFUNDS with this document offer. You may make as many copies of this document as you like, and use it in as many computers as you like. This document will NOT function without some type of Microsoft Spreadsheet Software. Make sure you have a licensed copy of one of the MS Software Programs currently installed and operating on your PC.
