1st Sewing Machine |
| This machine was
given to CD's Grandmother, Letha May (Allen) Adams, for a wedding
present in 1928. It was a used machine at that time. Then,
it was given to daughter, Leona, sometime in the early 1960s, who passed
it down to CD & his wife, Marlene, in the 1980s. |

| This little VS

beyond repair. The machine sews nicely, and is the machine that we
use in our parade vehicle named "T-Rag"
that we put together in August 2009. |

| The hand wheel
on this Singer 24-50 has a shallow belt groove in it. The Singer
24-50 parts manual lists wheel #22409 (see Singer photo) for this
machine, and it is a smooth wheel without a belt groove. Possibly,
the belt groove in this hand wheel was added with a lathe to provide for
an external motor not mounted under the machine. Note that the
wheel in the Singer Parts Chart photo is of the back side of the
wheel. The normal belt pulley is still on the machine in the
normal position. |

| This machine
probably came out as a treadle machine originally, and then was
converted to electric (by the looks of the motor that is labeled as a
"Standard", and the light is too new for the age of the
machine). It probably would have had a spoked hand wheel on it
that would have worked with an electric motor, so I'm not sure why the
wheel was replaced with a smaller solid wheel.
Also, take a close look at the decals. The
arm and bed center decals look like the Paperclip pattern, while the
border decals (around the edge of the bed) look like the Knots &
Rectangles pattern. Were the Paperclip decals even around in 1918?
Has the machine been repainted, or did it come out of
the Elizabethport factory this way? If the machine is a repaint by
Singer, why would they not paint the entire machine during rehab, and
apply all new decals? If the machine is a repaint by an
individual, where did they get the new decals, and wouldn't you think
that the border would have as much need for repaint and new decals as
the center of the bed and the arm? Hmmm. |

We set this combination of foot-needle
plate-feeddog up to test it for straight-line quilting of cotton
fabrics. The experiment was a failure. The hook wouldn't
catch the loop of thread from the needle. We believe that the
roller was too far from the needle to hold the fabric down as
needed. Although the wheel position is adjustable towards and away
from the needle by turning the screw on the foot, the lower thread guide
on the needlebar prevented us from setting the wheel any closer.
The roller foot may be good for laminated materials that are stiff, but
the stitch failed to make on thin garment leather as well. |

| This machine is actually not
a full-blooded 29K70, even though the tag says so. Sometime during
its life, the Needle Bar Driving Lever (top arm) has been replaced with
an early version of the lever, probably from a 29-4, that does not have
the adjustable Check Lever feature. I can't adjust the Check
Lever, but otherwise, it sews just fine.
I also ran into a problem with the holes in the top
of the treadle base being too small for the correct size bolt to mount
the head on the stand. I drilled the holes out in 1/64" increments,
going up 3 sizes. The stand drilled fine and the problem was
solved.

|
| We are no longer
in possession of this machine. We sold it in a yardsale in 1991 or
1992 to a neighbor lady 2 blocks east of us, for her daughters to learn
to sew. We wish we could find it again, but will probably have to
settle for just finding another machine of the same model. We
don't have the serial number of the machine, since the manual went with
the machine, and we didn't have it recorded anywhere else.
The machine was purchased from the Montgomery Ward
Catalog for $44 in 1975 with our wedding gift money. We actually
got two of them! Wards shipped us one through Rio Grand Motorway
Freight, and a second one through either the US Post Office or UPS, we
can't remember which. All we know, is that we got two of them, and
then sent one back. Wards gave us a credit for $44 when they got
the one back, and it took several phone calls to convince them that we
owed the $44 to them. We finally got everything straightened out,
and it sewed many things for the family for 15 years, until it was
replaced with A JC Penney 7057 in 1990. This is the only photo
that we have come up with of this machine.
